Brother and Sister

Brother and Sister

He didn’t have to go to church
Or anything
So he found a job.

She didn’t have to go
To work
Or anything
So
She found God.

Well, God found her
Right where she’d always been
On her knees,
Groveling in the dust.
The shame of
Another job lost.

Worshiping at the shrine
Of the successful father,
Who kept his mistress,
From her tender years,
And grudgingly bestowed
His few crumbs
On this “free-loading”
Female child

Who taught her to be Successful,
And to love and marry
Two flashy addicts,
Whom she rescued,
And who sucked her
Outer beauty,
And self-esteem,
And left her childless,
And in awe,
Of her “good guy”
Younger brother
Of whom daddy approved,
So, she chased a lost youth
And fantasy.

And clung to church
Which saw her down on the floor,
Where she couldn’t help but see
The clay feet
And the male hierarchy.
Shrugging their shoulders
And saying “That’s the way it is.”

And God was where God’s always been
Right beside her
Holding out His arms,
To the lost,
The forsaken,
The lonely,
And afraid.
And what he is offering
Is not
Crumbs,
Or dregs,
Or left overs,
But life and light and hope.
Can she accept them?

And let go of Daddy.
