A Blessing in Disguise

A Blessing in Disguise

Oh, Blessed Assurance the gifts
Are all mine
For the asking and taking
Take my will, make it thine

How I do stew and fret
As I stubbornly seek to
Force my way—not your way
When I’m hoping to sleep
To feel rest for the journey
To accept my weak state
When I need to give thanks
That you’ve wiped clean my slate
That you’ve poured out your blood
To release me from sin
That you’ve flushed me with radiance
Shining forth from within
That You’ve shown me such mercy
And lifted me up
Held my hand—soothed my spirit
As I drink from your cup

Lord, thank you, I praise you
Please, make me your own
For you nourish in all ways
Both my flesh and my bone
From the top of my head
To the tip of my toes
Both inside and outside
While you’ve shown, heaven knows,
What I need is acceptance
And patience and trust
To fell fully my weakness
For I’m made of dust

Help me fling my cares over
The side of this boat
Settle down in the stern
And allow it to float
In your river of grace
Through the tide of despair
To the shore of forgiveness
Resting peacefully there
